There is no need of smoking bans in this country.
Owners can hang a sign in their doors
'This is a smoking venue'
'This is a non-smoking venue'
This solution gives owners and customers choices

The poorest of areas always seem to fall foul to the biggest natural disasters such as the recent earthquake in Haiti but thanks to the international community aid is never far away. How much aid actually reaches the poor people to sustain or replenish their lifestyle remains to be seen.

Used to love the Umeda Pig. Didn't even realize it was gone until one night I was drinking in Umeda (usually stick to Shinsaibashi) and tried to make my way over only to find it gone. Never did like the Shinsaibashi Pig. Have been to the Kyoto Pig a few times, but that was way back in the day (meaning 1997-2000 for me).

The Pig wasn't my usual hangout by any stretch but when I first arrived in Japan str8 out of university it was a great place to put some beer back and hangout with all my new ex-pat friends. So much fun, soooo many good times.

So sad to see this place close.

Many a Gaijin told me it was the one thing that kept them sane in Japan, that includes me.

I first wandered into the Kyoto Pig on arrival in Japan, and was to spend many happy years there. Over the years it became our second home. Many a friendship, affair and wedding came from that place.

The staff were kind, Masta san lovely, the food good and there was always a friendly atmosphere.

I went back a few years ago and found myself staring out of a photo from 98, in one of the photo albums. I believe it was a darts competition.

One of the things I look forward to, when going back, is a trip to the old place.

Alas, so many other Gaijin bars opened up, and what once was an exception became the rule. It wasn't greedy landlords (a silly cliche). There was just too much competition. Dozens of Gaijin bars opened up all over Kansai, and the Pig just wasn't busy enough.

The one thing the Pig had was class. It was put together with care, right down to the imitation plastic beams.

Well.. farewell to a grand pub. I'll raise a Guiness to happy happy memories - and wish any fellows who joined me there the best of health.

I have this vague idea of teaching people tricks and performance art like buskers on the streets and in the parks of NYC. It may be a pipe dream, but they'd be performers instead of beggars?
