Information about Macau

It is said that Macau derived its name from the A-Ma temple dedicated to the Sea Goddess Matsu during the early settlement of the Portuguese in 16th century. When early explorers and sailors landed and enquired about the name they were told "A-Ma-Gao" which means A-Ma Bay. Hence the Portuguese settlers bestowed upon the peninsula the name Macau. Macau is the last and oldest of European settlements in China and was handed back to Chinese rule by the Portuguese in 1999

Today's Macau bears little resemblance to that which was inhabited by the Portuguese in 16th century. Situated just 61 km south west of Hong Kong and 140km south of Guangzhou (Canton) it comprises the peninsula and two principal islands of Taipa and Coloane.

With an incredible population density of 17,000 people per square kilometre Macau is one of the most crowded placed on the planet. Most of the population are Chinese living side by side with 2% of Portuguese decent and the balance from Hong Kong and the Philippines.

Until recently Macau boasted 6 casinos owned by Stanley Ho's enterprises. There are now 35 with others under constructions and Macau by Casino revenue now exceeds that of Las Vegas.

Macau offers a diverse array of Chinese cuisines as well as European the predominant flavour of which is Portuguese. Afficionados travel from far and wide to experience the local favourite - African Chicken.
