This sprawling capital of India with more than 15 million people is the 5th most populous city in the world and accounts for three quarters of India's capital input by virtue of it having the main port for cargo and passenger traffic.
The city is home to the headquarters of most major Indian commercial enterprises, multinational corporations and its fast growing film and television industry which gives rise to Mumbai's nickname - Bollywood.
The Gateway of India is situated in Mumbai, a monument commemorating the visit of King George V and Queen Mary. The last of the British ships set sail from here at the end of the British rule in 1947. Not far from here is the Chor Bazzaar, the famous Thieves Market where bargain hunters hope to shop for vases and trinkets of incalculable value and pay a pittance for such treasures.
Built in the 6th century the Elephant Caves attract more visitors than everything else put together in Munbai. It is a cave cut from solid rock carved into which are literally hundreds of shrines and stone sculptures of Hindu deity.
Swimming is not the recommended passtime at Chowpatty Beach, Mumbai's most famous. This beach is more popular at night as the magic of the carnival lights up the spirits. There is true action at Chowpatty.
