| After India gained independence from the British Empire on August 15th 1947, New Delhi was declared the official capital of the republic. It's present population exceeds 13 million. This mighty city has been classified as one of the most ancient, continually inhabited cities on the planet. Delhi suffers from the same modern urban diseases as most other major capitals like pollution, road traffic congestion, overcrowding and lack of resources relative to its population size.
Despite the pollution there are some fascinating sights to be had such as the Bahai'i Lotus Temple; The Qutub Minar, the world's tallest minaret which is free standing; The Humayun's Tomb; The India Gate (commemorating Indian soldiers who perished in World War I; and, the largest Hindu temple on earth - The Akshardham Temple.
