Phuket is located in the Andaman Sea in the South East of Thailand and is the biggest of Thailand's numerous islands.  It has a relatively small population as apart from tourism there exists only farming and cottage industries.  Because of the geography of the island in that more than 70% is covered in forest and the Eastern beaches, closer to the mainland, comprise more mud than sand most of the tourist activity is set on the Western side of the island.

By far the most popular destination on Phuket is the beach town of Patong given its easy access to the long wide beaches.  Almost all of Phuket's nightlife and budget shopping is located here.

A trip to Phuket is not complete without a day trip to Phi Phi Islands to the south east.  Apart from diving in waters teaming with fish and a plethora of water sports and activities Phuket offers Elephant Trekking, White Water Rafting and Golf as somethings to do when the call of the beach becomes taxing on the ear (or sunburned body).

A word to the wise though when you see the ocean recede and fish flapping on the sand don't just stand and stare - run for your life.  Over 5,000 people lost their lives in the Tsunami of 2004 with 250 or more from Phuket.
