Positioned between Asia and Australia this massive archipelago of more than 17,200 islands comprises more than three hundred ethnicities which exist in relative harmony. The main islands are Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Papua. Possibly the most famous holiday destination in Indonesia is Kuta on the island of Bali which was the target of terrorist attacks in 2002 resulting in the deaths of 202 innocent people. Aside from its remaining natural rain forests which are home to the Orangutans Indonesia maintains a high reputation for its arts and crafts which include weaving, silverware, wood carving and batik. The flora is astonishing and the fauna includes such endemic species as one-horned rhinos; elephants; tigers; komodo dragons and dugongs. The tropical waters are teaming with myriad fish, marine mamals and coral species.
